What sport has practice from 4:30-6:30 in the morning? Swim. Although recently they stopped having early morning practices, they still do practice hard in the water. The swim team often practices at least three times a week from 6th period until 4:40 pm.

The boys and girls swim just began their league meets and will compete against the high schools of Summit, Bloomington, Patriot, Kaiser and Norte Vista. The girls swim was going to have their first league meet but was canceled. Even though it was cancelled the boys of the swim team still had their first league meet against Summit which resulted in a victory.

Like most sports, swim has their captains. Each team has their junior captain and senior captain. The boy’s captain, senior Alex Lytle, has been on swim since his freshman year. He hopes this year that the team goes to CIF. The girl’s captain, senior Analysa Preciado, has also been in swim since a freshman and expects the team to “have fun and give it their all.” She also said, “Once you’re on the team, it is like family.”

“Swim is a sport that requires determination, lots of practice, and being committed.”

On Tuesday, April 10, 2012 people around the globe participated in TOMS National No Shoes Day. This is a day in order to promote awareness for children who do not have the opportunity to have shoes. However students at Jurupa Valley High School were unable to participate in this event. Students were told they were not able to participate due to potential health and distraction reason. Yet many students don’t believe this is fair to them.

We both feel that it is an important cause and students at JVHS should have the opportunity to participate in this event if they choose to. Some students were told that they could participate in the event this year if they had written consent or a permission slip from their parents or legal guardian. And while this is a reasonable compromise for the school to make, it is also somewhat unnecessary. If students choose to participate in this event then they should be responsible for that choice, as well as the fact that our campus is not littered with glass and other various hazardous objects for a student to accidently step on.

Other students, such as sophomore, Alex Lopez thinks that JVHS students should participate in National No Shoes Day for next year because he said “It’s fun and it’s for a good cause.”

Sophomore, Greg Newcomb, said that he would want to participate in the event next year because “it would be a fun experience.”

Sophomore, Dylan Wnuk said “It’s good to feel the ground around your feet; it makes you one with the earth!!”

Senior, Guillermo Rogel, believes that National No Shoes Day should be allowed because “it promotes an issue that is widely ignored.”

Basically, we, along with multiple other students on campus, feel that we should be allowed to take a part in this noteworthy event. It is not only a fun experience but also promotes exposure to a worthy cause so commonly overlooked by not only by Americans, but by people all over the world. This is just our way to give back and show that we care.

Around this time of year, there is an enormous amount of stress that begins to overwhelm students. Students have to worry about the SAT, ACT, AP testing, finals, and college applications. Add to that mix friends, relationships, family and teenage drama and you have a great amount of stress building up in today’s youth.

Most students at Jurupa Valley High School are involved in advanced placement classes, clubs, sports, afterschool activities and some even have jobs. These students are expected to keep their grades up, and all the while they also have to deal with their other activities which most of the time are very time consuming.

Vanessa Franco a senior at JVHS is an advanced placement student, captain of the Varsity cheer squad, is involved in choir and has been accepted to UC Santa Barbara. When asked about how she deals with stress she said, “I tell myself smile, I’ve been blessed to live another day and I know I’m strong enough to get through what life brings me.”

Aside from school stress students can also have personal problems that can lead them to becoming stressed.

Mrs. Jennifer Green, a guidance coordinator at JVHS says, “Students need to know when to take breaks and know what their limits are.” She believes students can avoid stress; she said, “Don’t procrastinate on your studying, plan ahead, and pace yourself.”

So if you are ever feeling stressed take a moment, step back and breathe.

Human rights issues rage everyday, be it the invisible children or the homeless on our own streets, humanitarian causes have always been at the forefront of a society. One group known as LiNK or Liberation in North Korea is dedicated to helping North Korean refugees any way possible.

After recently having a chance too talk to two “Nomads” questions arose over the goals and personal thoughts throughout LiNK. Hope is extremely prevalent throughout LiNK’s ranks, after the “Nomads” belief that with the death of Kim Jong Ill, life for the Koreans will change but only time will tell in what ways. The North Korean populace it seems is ready for a change, in the social culture and way things are run, facts that come directly from refugees.

Propaganda is widely used by the North Korean Government but Military might seems to be challenged as many citizens seem to be upset with the class system in the country. Liberty seems to be a concept that appeals to the North Korean populace, as the idea of democracy seems to be appealing to the country.

While LiNK believes in liberating and empowering the people they do not argue for an armed resistance. LiNK is not a government organization nor sponsored by any government, but when a reporter was captured by the North Koreans they asked about LiNK by name, seemingly validating the importance of such a group. LiNK launches missions to rescue North Korean refugees fleeing the country for a better life, placing their own lives in danger to hopefully help the less fortunate.

LiNK wishes people would learn more about and support the human rights issue in Korea. Helping others is an honorable deed and this group has made it their mission to help the refugees and spread the word about this issue.

Time Magazine released an issue titled 100 New Scientific Discoveries showing many new things that are happening in the science world right now. Some examples of these extraordinary discoveries are…

Spray on technology is the newest thing. Fabrican, a British company has created a way to “bond and liquefy fibers so that textiles can be sprayed out of a can or spray gun straight on to a body form.” Although many people think that there clothes right now are perfectly fine, these spray on clothes could eliminate the problem of having to find sizes that fit. According to the company they will be looking into “a range of hygiene or cleaning products.”

Invisibility has officially been made possible. The University of California “announced that like the folks at the Imperial College of London, they’d invented an invisibility cloak.” They used aluminum ten times thinner than a piece of paper, and then “wrapped an object inside it, making it effectively invisible.” Hopefully, in the near future we can be able to make the invisibility able to work on humans or other things.

A new place to live might have been found. One of Saturn’s moons Titan, which is “bigger than Mercury,” might actually be able to have an atmosphere. But, “if an alternative form of life could exist with liquid methane taking the place of water in cells,” we could be able to live on this moon. So maybe in the near future we will have human life on a moon in our galaxy.

China has now come up with a highly secret way of passing messages. The scientists discovered a way to alter the particles of light and “[transmit] them at light speed via a blue laser.” This is possible by the “Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which states that the mere act of measuring a particle alters it.” This means that the messages will only be able to be seen by two people, and will be altered and not be able to be uncoded by anyone else. America is now trying to make a similar invention, making it so we could have secret messages stay secret.

“The National Institute of Standards and Technology, built two atomic clocks” and tried some different tests on it, making it so that they proved a point made in Planet of The Apes that if you travel fast enough you will be able to slow down time. The bad part though, is that “If you live to be 80, they would add only 90-billionths of a second to your life.”

Throughout scientific discoveries we can learn more about the world we live in. New things may not always be good, but some can help to saves lives. Although the world may take a long time to be completely understood, we are making great progress.

Jurupa Valley High School has started its first chapter and its first year of National Honor Society, a new program that acknowledges students for their scholarship, service, leadership and character. The acceptance of this program is “one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student”. Although National Honor Society is new to JVHS, there are more than 15,000 chapters in schools across the nation.

In order to remain in this program you have to maintain your GPA at a minimum of 3.5, do community service both individually and with the group and have character. If a member’s GPA decreases to less than 3.5 students are put on probation. The members of the JVHS chapter participated in a candle lighting ceremony on March 27 and in all the projects and meetings.

Guidance Coordinator Jenifer Green is the advisor of the National Honor Society for JVHS. The students accepted to the program by the faculty council received a pin and a letter sent to their homes.

Friday, April 6 was the opening premiere of Titanic 2D and 3D, an unforgettable movie that was brought back to a new generation. The starting actors in this romantic tragedy are Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet. The film went viral for a second time.

Dicaprio played the role of Jack Dawson a poor labor worker going on the boat to go to America in search for a better life. Winslet played the role of Rose Dewitt Bukater a young lady born into a wealthy family and boarded the Titanic just for luxury.

Throughout their journey Rose and Jack experience romantic and heart breaking moments that test their love. Although Rose was wealthy she was not happy being engaged to a man she did not love. Rose’s encounter with Jack showed her a different perspective on life which made her realize a lot of things. Throughout their journey they fall deeply in love with each other but at the end fate decides to separate them.

Aside from it being a love story this also explains the tragedy of what happened to the ship Titanic. The Titanic was a big ship believed to not be able to sink, but when tragedy struck and they hit an iceberg, crashing was exactly what they did. Experiencing it in 3D was a thrilling experience and you get to see the difference from the original movie. This movie will have you in the edge of seat due to the 3D effects.

Titanic 3D deserves five out of five stars. I would recommend Titanic to people who enjoy watching love and tragedy films.

Once again, The American Cancer Society will be hosting the 24 hour annual fundraising event this year at Jurupa Valley High School from 9 a.m. of Saturday, April 28 until 9 a.m. of Sunday, April 29.

The Relay for Life, as it is called, is a life-changing event in which whatever amount of money raised is donated towards the American Cancer Society. The Relay is also a chance to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remember the loved ones who have passed from cancer, and to help raise money to fight against the disease. The Relay is held in multiple communities, not just at JVHS, so that many more people can share and benefit from the experience.

To participate in the Relay, each person must be enlisted in a team. The teams compete against one another and try to raise the most amount of money at the event. The teams raise money by setting up booths for food, beverages, toys, games, or anything else that would be suitable to raise money for while at the Relay.

During the Relay, one person from each team must be walking, carrying a baton of some sort, to represent their team’s participation. Each teams’ baton must be continuously walked around the track, all day, for 24hrs straight. If whoever is walking gets tired, they are allowed to take “walking shifts” with another person from the same team.

People can also participate in the “themed laps” during the Relay. Each hour of walking has its own unique theme in which the people walking are allowed to dress up or carry an item that resembles the theme.

To sign up for the Relay for Life, see Mrs. Kaylor in the Career Center, or log on to www.relayforlife.org to sign up online, or for more information.
