13 Little Blue Envelopes is a young adult novel by Maureen Johnson. It follows the travels of 17-year old Ginny Blackstone as she is sent on a cross-European trek by her runaway and deceased Aunt Peg.

The novel starts with the first letter she receives, which outlines the rules and gives her instructions with how to proceed. Each new letter contains new tasks for her to perform – from becoming a “Mysterious Benefactor,” to an artist inLondon, to searching throughParisfor an unnamed café.

On her travels, Ginny meets several colorful characters, from the bad boy turned playwright Keith Dobson, to a get up and go family in theNetherlands. She ends up learning a lot about herself as she is sent on a summer long scavenger hunt acrossEurope.

All in all, I would recommend this book. It accurately portrays a teenage girl and the problems she faces when thrown into an uncompromising and unknown world. It can be slow at times, but it more than makes up for it with amusing dialogue and likable characters.
